I will surely never portray who exactly these three men were to everyone, but with the stakes this high I want to share a bit about MY relationship with them. Knowing that no one truly dies if they live in our memories I pushed through my fear and bring you the following. As I began to write I realized that time has faded some of the memories. When I first thought of putting together a tribute to my good friends lost on that hot August night I was afraid that I would fall short of my attempt to commemorate their beautiful lives. 23 years later- ten years ago Joe would recount the events and what was racing through his mind. The entire crew including Joe’s father Captain Cosmo Marcantonio were lost at sea in September of 1978. The sinking of Joe’s boat the Starbound happend 23 years after Joe had lost his own father to the sea in the sinking of the Gloucester Dragger the F/V Captain Cosmo. He wrote this account of the events that led up to the sinking of his boat so that his family and the families of his crewmembers would know exactly what happened. Joe trusted me and our platform GoodMorningGloucester to tell the story that had been locked away and never been told to anyone for ten years. It was six months after that fateful night ten years ago today when my cousin Joe Marcantonio sat down at his computer and wrote down exactly what happened the night his herring boat was run down by the oil tanker Virgo and his three crewmembers were lost to the sea. As you know we write 20 or so posts a day here at GMG but today there will be an unprecedented single post-this one. In honor and respect to the families who lost their loved ones ten years ago this will be the only post of the day. The Starbound sank 130 miles off Cape Ann August 5th, 2001

I guess I have just decided to act 'on the principle of the thing' in this case. In that case, the error is mine, and I accept that responsibility. I often pay the postage for returning an item that did not fit because I had ordered the wrong size. I use online shopping often, and I have never had to pay for returning an item that was faulty upon opening the package. All were polite and steadfast in keeping to their company's return policy: YOU may return the product for another InStyler AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE. I have spoken to customer service representatives Daniel, Brandi, Cookie, Jose and Rick. After we went back and forth with those issues with a line developing behind me, what struck me in total disbelief is when he said to me, “What door did you come in?” I couldn't understand why I was being ask that, so I responded to him with "What did you say?” He then repeated with "What door did you come in, the 3rd Ave or 4th Ave side of the store?” I responded with “What are you asking me that for?” and he replied with "So I can run the cameras back.” He asks me a series of questions of if I have my receipt, where did I purchase the rugs, things that were in reason due to the fact that I didn't have my receipt or the ticket information information. The manager comes down asks me for my identification, and becomes completely disrespectful. As the cashier prepares the return she calls for a manager for approval. I removed the tags because I had thought that I was going to keep the rugs but decided otherwise. She takes the items out of the bag, looks them over and notices the tags are off of the rugs. If you choose a small incubator without an egg turner, just remember that it is up to you to turn the eggs at least twice a day.Įxperts recommend that you set the temperature of your still-air incubator to 101 to 102 degrees to best avoid the formation of cold spots on the inside. Incubator capacity and price vary widely, so it’s wise to consider how many eggs you are likely to hatch in a year before you take the financial plunge. Both types of incubators may be equipped with automatic or manual egg turners, and both offer some means for managing relative humidity. Forced-air incubators use a fan to circulate internal air. Still-air incubators lack mechanical air circulation. There are two principal categories of incubators suitable for the home flock: still-air and forced-air. ![]() When most folks think of incubating eggs, their minds turn to any manner of electromechanical devices that provide the right temperature and humidity. Many folks try to prevent their laying hens from going broody because they don’t lay eggs while hatching and raising chicks – if you want to hatch a few chicks though, a broody hen can be a godsend. If you already have a laying flock and one of your hens becomes broody, she can incubate her own eggs, or you can place fertile eggs obtained elsewhere in her nest, and she will do her best to hatch them. A broody hen will take care of ventilating and warming the eggs and will handle all of the turning and chick-rearing duties as well. What’s a broody hen, you wonder? This hen has undergone progesterone-induced changes that make her want to sit on eggs to hatch them and brood the resulting chicks. The easiest way to incubate and hatch fertile chicken eggs is to have a broody hen do all the work for you. During the hatching phase, it’s best to lay the eggs on their sides. In general, eggs should be incubated with their pointed ends down (air cell up) – but it is also important to turn or tip the eggs back and forth at least twice a day – the more often they are turned, the better. Changing an egg’s attitude helps exercise the embryo and prevent it from sticking to the shell. Just as temperature and humidity are important to maximizing the hatch, eggs need to be moved around on a regular basis for best results. Lowering the temperature helps account for the extra heat that the larger embryos produce as a result of their metabolism, and the increased humidity helps keep the chicks from getting stuck to the membrane that’s located just inside the egg shell as they break out of the shell. ![]() During the final three days of incubation, the eggs should ideally be located in a slightly cooler (98.5 degrees) and more humid (65 percent relative humidity or greater) environment to facilitate successful hatching. Consider that number to be a target – not an absolute. ![]() To facilitate proper aeration and gas exchange between the embryo inside the egg and the outside world, the eggs must not be held in a tightly sealed container.Ĭhicken eggs typically hatch after 21 days of incubation. Perhaps the most important parameter is temperature – chicken eggs should be incubated at a temperature between 99 and 102 degrees Fahrenheit (99.5 is often considered to be ideal) and 50 to 65 percent relative humidity (60 percent is often considered the ideal). Incubation TemperatureĬhicken eggs need a fairly specific environment to develop properly and hatch successfully. Hatching fertile eggs need not be difficult, but your success rate can be increased by following a few guiding principles. Likewise for folks who keep a rooster in their flock, incubating eggs is a great way to increase the flock size, or to provide replacements for birds that have been culled. For folks who are uncertain about receiving live animals through the mail, or simply cannot handle the minimum number of day-old chicks that most hatcheries require, incubating fertile eggs is an attractive alternative. But that’s not the only way to create your first flock or maintain your existing one. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? For most backyard poultry enthusiasts, the chicken came first – well, more correctly, the day-old chicks first arrived in the mail. A broody hen takes the work out of incubating eggs. ![]() It’s a helluva part, and Sandler aces it. Sandler’s performance shows that time may have provided him peeks at the errors of his ways, but the fact that he’s continued to get away with things gives him the confidence to carry on, without lessons learned. Howard’s passions for business, money, gambling, women and sports are entirely normal, but he doesn’t seem to have learned much about his own shortcomings over the years. This is also true of the entire cast top to bottom, but the way is led by Sandler. Uncut Gems would need to be on any final list of films in which the greatest percentage of dialogue is yelled.Īnd yet the Safdies and the cast go deep enough here to make the film a genuinely human one it may not be a lifestyle that most people will recognize, but the dynamics and desires and anxieties all feel real, thanks to the way the writer-directors push through the obvious dramatic trappings to tap into credible feelings. This relationship hits the rocks during this period when Howard is sweating over basketball scores he’s bet big on and whether or not he’ll ever get the big gem back. Of course, Howard has a woman on the side, Julia (Julia Fox), a nice young lady who - what else? - works at his jewelry store and for whom he provides an apartment. His wife Dinah (Idina Menzel), who well knows how to deal with her husband, is naturally furious. What should be a calm night out for the Ratner family on the occasion of a school theater presentation morphs into an insane set of events that finds Howard locked nude in the trunk of a car. The writers have concocted any number of outrageous incidents that, in fact, feel real and not gags invented just to be toppers. For his part, however, Howard nearly always has an angle, another card to play - what’s a new day without a fresh fire to put out? Of course, Howard doesn’t get his valued piece of rock back when he expects it, and this is just the beginning of promises not met, debts remaining unpaid, lies mounting to cover the shortcomings and everyone becoming angrier and angrier. The Safdies plunge the audience into the deep end of this world, and it’s easy to be both overwhelmed and seriously put off by the vulgarity of it everyone is brash, it’s the norm for promises and expectations not to be met, feverish yelling is the accepted mode of communication and no day is complete without a new unwelcome incident. Adam Sandler delivers an almost maniacally embodied performance as Howard Ratner, a fast-talking New York jeweler and gambler in relentless pursuit of the next big score. Having just acquired it and against his better instincts, Howard lets one of his most valued customers, basketball titan Kevin Garnett, borrow the piece, a misjudgment that sets in motion no end of crises and misfortune. This jolt of pure cinematic adrenaline affirmed directors Josh and Benny Safdie as heirs to the gritty, heightened realism of Martin Scorsese and John Cassavetes. In a brief Ethiopian-set prologue, a football-sized piece of rock is extracted from a mine, and numerous embedded gems are clearly of significant value. It wasn't like I was just packing up my old clothes, it was like I was packing up my old life.On the other hand, some people get off on this, and for Howard it’s the core of his existence. ![]() "After meeting him, a couple days later, all my shit was in boxes, gone," Fox said. It is a lonely place to visit without a guide or at least a fellow tourist. ![]() Remembrance is the most complete portrait of a society in all of modern literature, one that is impossibly remote from the world of 60 years ago, much less today. This brings me to my next point, which is that one should try to read Proust alongside at least one other person, preferably an experienced Proustian who is making his way through for the second or third or tenth time. This is an exaggeration, but not a very gross. Nancy Mitford told Evelyn Waugh more than half a century ago that English speakers have always misunderstood Proust, whereas to the French he might as well be P.G. (When you are a thousand or so pages in and cannot help yourself from pressing on to learn what Brichot has to say about the death of Swann, you will have reached the stage at which it is probably acceptable to lie down with Proust.) Sooner or later readers will discover that the novel unfolds not slowly per se but at something that approximates the pace of life itself - or, better yet, that "real life" is blissfully Proustian.Īnother pitfall is the assumption (based, again, as far as I can tell on the fact that most would-be readers have not made it past the first eight or so pages of Swann's Way) that Proust is a very dour and introspective writer who is far more interested in what his narrator is feeling and thinking than what, if anything, happens in the world around him. It follows from here that Proust should be read slowly, 20 or so pages at a time. It is also more or less the only feeling most people associate with the author who, they would be astonished to learn, wrote equally well about love, family, religion, art, music, politics, fashion, the beauty of the natural world, anti-Semitism, and the weather. To begin at the beginning, the Combray overture at the outset of the first volume, Swann's Way, ("For a long time I used to go to bed early") is the most pleasant description of sleepiness ever written. If I had to guess, I would say that in the vast majority of cases the same handful of things prevent the average reader who is otherwise inclined to sit down with Proust from getting on. ![]() (The latter has also taken much longer to write than Remembrance.) Both of these have sold many millions of copies. At a few thousand pages and around 1,250,000 words, Proust is only slightly longer than Harry Potter, which has been read by millions of children, and A Song of Ice and Fire, a novel cycle about hobbits who have sex, stands unfinished at more than 5,000 pages. It cannot be a simple question of length. Why this is the case is not entirely clear. Remembrance of Things Past (as I prefer to think of it) is probably the least read of all "Great Books," with the obvious exception of Finnegans Wake, which is neither great nor a book. |
